The Kings XI Punjab (concise as KXIP) is a franchise cricket team based in Mohali, Punjab that plays in the Indian Premier League. Situated in 2008, the franchise is equally owned by Bollywood performer Preity Zinta, Wadia assembly scion Ness Wadia, Dabur’s Mohit Burman and Karan Paul. The player plays its home matches at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Since the 2010 IPL, they have been playing several of their home games at Dharamsala as well.
The Kings XI Punjab's catchment areas are Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, also evident from the letter sequence "K J H P H" in the banner of the team's logo. Apart from concluding IPL runners-up in the 2014 season when they also topped the league table, the team has complete only one playoff appearance.

Franchise history

In 2007, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) formed the cricket tournament Indian Premier League based on the Twenty20 system of the game. Franchises for eight cities were made accessible in an auction held in Mumbai on 20 February 2008. The team describe Punjab was bought by the Dabur group's Mohit Burman (46%), the Wadia group's Ness Wadia (23%), Preity Zinta (23%), and Karan Paul of the Apeejay Surendera assembly (minor stake). The group paid a total of $76 million to attain the franchise. On 10 October 2010 the franchise contract for the Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals were completed by the league, but the termination was cancelled.

Expulsion from the IPL and return

Following the controversy surrounding the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, the Indian Premier League announced that it had terminated the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. The teams announced that they would acquire whatever legal action possible to remain in the Indian Premier League primarily the team tried to negotiate a clarification with the league but when that couldn't be reached, they decided to file a case in Mumbai High Court accusing the IPL of getting rid of two teams so that when the bidding process starts for the 2012 IPL season the contract would be given to a more lucrative bidder
Kings XI Punjab was reinstated with contribution from the High Court.

In 2015, the official designation sponsor of the Kings XI was Tata Motors Prima though they had on board as many as 25 sponsors, the maximum for any team in the IPL. Their primary sponsors are HTC, Royal Stag, ACC Limited and DCB Bank where Britannia, BIG FM 92.7, Mountain Dew, Kingfisher Premium, Bookmyshow, Punjab Kesari, The Tribune, Blippar, beam Foundation and AIDS Healthcare Foundation function as their associates.
